The Protecting Veil ft. Raphael Wallfisch

A bold new production of Tavener's visionary work

Staged and performed at Round Chapel as part of Spitalfields Music Festival 2025.

The Protecting Veil by John Tavener is one of very few classical works ever shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Written for solo cello and accompanying string ensemble, the piece is presented here by music and dance students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire, and features the legendary British cellist, Raphael Wallfisch. Expect to be immersed in glorious sound, and to be moved by the accompanying dance of this new interpretation.

Fire in the Mountain Presents: Spafford Campbell - Tomorrow Held

Open your palm — there it is: the morrow, held and released. Tomorrow Held is the visionary new album from Spafford Campbell, blending post-rock, jazz, chamber classical, and folk into eight immersive, mostly instrumental tracks. Fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell, both conservatoire-trained, create textured, genre-defying music that demands presence. Following their acclaimed debut You, Golden and 2024's 102 Metres East EP, this project blazes a trail through ambient loops, processed fiddle, and experimental soundscapes. Echoing Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden and Bon Iver’s ethereality, Tomorrow Held is a spacious, transcendent listen — reflective, mysterious, and fiercely original.

Nora Brown with Stephanie Coleman

Nora Brown is the “brightest young star in old-time music” (Songlines), playing traditional music focused on southern Appalachian banjo and guitar, with her singing revealing her “thirst for storytelling.”(NPR) . She digs deep: “a reverent nod to deeply-rooted ole-time traditions, and an exhibit of sonic heirlooms carefully amended to meet a modern moment with vintage elegance.” American Songwriter. The New Yorker called her most recent solo record Long Time To Be Gone “a disarming collection of traditional laments and exquisite banjo instrumentals.”

Nora will perform in a duo with award-winning fiddler Stephanie Coleman. First brought together by Brooklyn’s tight-knit old-time music community, Nora Brown and Stephanie Coleman share a rich musical partnership that belies their 20 year age difference. Stephanie is a master old-time fiddler, having recorded with and toured internationally over the last two decades with celebrated artists including trailblazing all-women string band Uncle Earl.

Beginning at age 6, under the tutelage of the late musician and scholar Shlomo Pestcoe, Brown also counts Alice Gerrard, George Gibson, and the late John Cohen, Lee Sexton, and John Haywood among her teachers and mentors. Just nineteen years old, Brown has released three albums, a single, and an EP on Jalopy Records – all of which have charted on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.

Fire in the Mountain and Hackney Folk Club Presents:

Mama’s Broke + Dana Sipos

Doors 7:30pm
Dana Sipos 8pm
Mama’s Broke 9:15pm

Mama’s Broke is a powerful folk duo that deliver a compelling performance with heart and raw energy. Although highly influenced by their Canadian roots, Lisa and Amy are based out of nowhere and everywhere.

Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin, and incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their performance. Their original – and often dark – compositions push the boundaries of tradition and the constraints of genre. Drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan and doom metal, they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new.

Since forming the band in 2014, Mama’s Broke has been gaining momentum fast ; having already completed two European, and several Canadian and U.S. tours. They have performed in a wide range of venues, from circus shows in New Orleans, to pirate ships in Amsterdam, to concert halls in Ireland, to theatres in Brooklyn. In this way, they stay true to the transient nature of folklore, as they travel the world sharing and collecting song.

Dana Sipos

Known for crafting music that is both fragile and orchestral, acclaimed Canadian songwriter Dana Sipos invites the listener beneath the surface through a nuanced lens that isn't afraid to be out of focus at times. Sipos’ talent for earthen imagery, rich spiralling vocals, and textured instrumentation sets the stage for a deeply moving performance. She is a consummate performer, having brought her unique brand of cosmic “moon-folk” to living rooms, concert halls and festivals stages across North America, Europe and Australia Her 2021 release, The Astral Plane was lauded as a “mesmerizing jewel of an album" (No Depression) and garnered Sipos a Solo Artist of the Year nomination at the 2022 Canadian Folk Music Awards. With a new collection of captivating songs that hold the complexity of the human experience up to the light, her new album, Golden Molten, will be released in spring 2025.

Lewis Walker: Bornsick

A new performance commission that examines the human search for authenticity in a world built on repetition.

Bornsick reflects the idea that we inherit illness—born into a system that shapes us before we can define ourselves. The gymnastics and dance performance explores identity as a compulsive act of referencing, an endless cycle of borrowing and reshaping of what came before.

From the moment we enter the world, we inherit history—gestures, roles, expectations. We are taught movement, speech, and existence. The queer body, in particular, exists in a tension between conformity and freedom, constructing and reconstructing itself through cultural echoes. In a world built on repetition, in Bornsick, identity becomes an act of shapeshifting, a constant negotiation between imposed structures and self-determined transformation, never fixed but always in flux.

This idea comes to life in the performance as a body is built, piece by piece—a character assembled through learned movements, imposed behaviours, and artificial layers. Yet as these layers are stripped away, what remains is not a pure, original self, but another reference, another construct. Through conditioning, we create a machine. Through unlearning, we return to the animal. The cycle continues, revealing that there is no final, fixed truth—only endless adaptation.

Bornsick suggests that humanhood is a paradox—we search for something real, yet everything we are is borrowed. We long for authenticity, but if reality is only an echo of what came before, then individuality itself is an illusion— the self exists purely as a reflection.

Bornsick is commissioned by Serpentine and Edinburgh Art Festival.

1851 Census: Who were the Irish in Hackney & Stoke Newington?
The census of 1851 was the first to record place of birth, marital status and occupation for people living in Britain. The census that year also recorded a jump in London’s Irish-born population from 75,000 in 1841 to 109,000 in 1851, reflecting mass migration caused by An Gorta Mór, Ireland’s Great Famine of 1847-1852. While London’s Irish population had long been concentrated in poor central districts like Whitechapel and St Giles in the Fields, a small minority lived in Hackney and Stoke Newington. And their census records - as workers, wives, clergy and institutional inmates - illuminate less familiar aspects of the Irish presence in Victorian London.

Tales from Hackney’s Memory Palaces
Since films first flickered on London screens in 1896 Hackney has been home to more than 60 cinemas ranging from grand architectural marvels to neighbourhood fleapits. Having delved into the archives, cinema historian and tour guide Nigel Smith tells the story of more than 100 years of cinema-going in the borough. Nigel Smith is a lifelong movie nerd. He’s part of the team producing BBC Radio 4’s film and TV programme Screenshot, co-founded the long-running Tufnell Park Film Club and leads guided walking tours exploring London’s old cinemas. His website Memory Palaces aims to tell stories associated with 100 buildings in the capital that are or have been cinemas. Follow him on Instagram @nigelsmithwalks and find out more about his tours at memorypalaces.co.uk.

Andrew Whitehead
We Shall Fight, We Will Win: "the British New Left""
In 1956, a new political movement emerged, explicitly socialist but rejecting both Soviet-style Communism and Labour's cautious embrace of social democracy. The New Left was concerned with ideas and culture. Those involved worked mainly outside political parties and electoral politics. In the 1960s, it helped shape the peace movement, student radicalism, the counterculture, opposition to the Vietnam war and the emerging Women's and Gay Liberation movements. It championed direct action and new forms of political communication, from agitprop poetry to silkscreen posters. Andrew Whitehead - who is working on an oral history of the New Left - traces the story of the New Left and its legacy and explores the role of Hackney politicos such as Sheila Rowbotham, David Widgery and the Grosvenor Avenue commune.

From Hackney With Love: An Intimate History of Regeneration, Gentrification and Belonging
From Hackney, With Love: An Intimate History of Regeneration, Gentrification and Belonging is an insider exploration of the dramatic social, cultural and economic transformation of one of the most iconic places in Britain – my home, the London Borough of Hackney. My talk will explore the borough's history over the last three hundred years, and its transition from a middle class suburb to one of the poorest areas of Britain. But it will also examine through several social themes how Hackney has once again become a home for the middle classes in recent decades, which has been driven by the effects of regeneration, neoliberalism and gentrification - particularly since the 2012 Olympics, and has displaced existing working class communities in the process.

2:00 PM - 2:50 PM
Amir Dotan
Look up, look down: Spotting local history everywhere
Our surroundings are filled with relics and remnants of the past, often hidden in plain sight. As we go about our daily lives, we rarely take the time to look up or down, missing the fascinating traces of history embedded in our environment. From disused coal hole covers and old boundary markers to servants’ doorbells, boot scrapers, and faded street signs, these overlooked artefacts tell the story of how people once lived and worked. Stoke Newington historian Amir Dotan will share intriguing examples of these historical treasures he has discovered while exploring Stoke Newington’s urban landscape, offering a new perspective on the rich history that surrounds us every day.

3:00 PM - 3:50 PM
Sheela Banerjee and Lucy Fulford
From Hooghly to Hackney: Hidden Histories of Empire, Race and Migration
Journey through centuries and continents, and back to present-day Hackney, as authors Sheela Banerjee and Lucy Fulford share personal stories of migration to Britain, which reveal even bigger histories of empire and race. In What's in a Name? Friendship, Identity and History in Modern Multicultural Britain, Sheela – who has lived in Hackney for over 20 years – unravels the personal histories of friends and family through their names, including her own ancestors, who once lived by the banks of India’s Hooghly River. In The Exiled: Empire, Immigration and the Ugandan Asian Exodus, Lucy explores how the Ugandan Asian expulsion of the 1970s continues to impact the UK to this day..

4:00 PM - 4:50 PM
Jerry White
Radicals and Loyalists: Hackney in a Revolutionary City, 1789-1815
The outbreak of the French Revolution in the summer of 1789 was at first broadly welcomed in London, especially among the many radicals and dissenters of Stoke Newington and Hackney. But as the events in France became more bloodthirsty, and as apparently dangerous democratic agitations began to trouble the streets of London, an opposing view developed, especially among the property-owning classes of the suburbs, Hackney among them. In early 1793 France declared war on Britain and Holland and the London supporters of revolution quickly came to be seen as potentially treasonable allies of the enemy across the Channel. This led to an organised expression of loyalism, often taking a military tone, which faced outwards (to protect England from invasion) and inwards (to protect London from radical insurgents). Hackney was caught in the middle of this struggle, active radicals and blue-coated loyalists competing for the future of the parish, and of London.

5:00 PM - 5:50 PM
Tony Travers
Hackney Council at 60
Tony will talk about Hackney in the 60 years since it was created as one of today's London boroughs in 1965. He will consider the borough's extraordinary contemporary history, including both the high and low points. Few boroughs have changed as much in recent decades, with remarkable demographic and social differences affecting all parts of the borough. And what is likely to change in the years ahead? What might Hackney look like if and when it reaches its 100th birthday in 2065?

6:00 PM - 6:50 PM
Dr Matthew Green & friends
The lost world of Dudley Ryder
An immersive, illustrated talk on a forgotten Hackney diarist who is easily as gripping as Samuel Pepys, with a costumed actor performing readings, evoking in rich, vivid detail the lost world of 18th-century Hackney, and exploring how — over the last couple of decades, with the relentless march of gentrification — the Hackney villages have come full-circle.

Psychedelic Gong Bath - May 5th

Please wear warm clothes and bring your own mats and sleeping bags/duvets/blankets to the venue.

“ Psychedelic experience without psychedelics”.

TICKETS HERE

As you lie on a mat on the floor, gongs, singing bowls, other ritual instruments and voice will be used to weave a tapestry of sound.

The vibrations create a feeling of being 'bathed' or carried away into the space, with participants variously reporting subtle or powerful bodily sensations, a deep meditative state often accompanied by rich imagery and visions, or feeling of timeless nothingness and bliss. During the session the brainwaves are altered to the state that is self-healing, and has balancing benefits on the body and mind. Occasionally some sounds might trigger unpleasant and suppressed emotions that flow up to the surface — please accept them as a part of a healing process. In most cases the overall experience is very relaxing and ecstatic, and participants feel refreshed and recharged for a few days after the session.

Tea with lucid dreaming herbs including blue lotus will be served before and after the gong bath.

To get the best out of the experience:

* KEEP YOURSELF WARM & COMFY. The venue is an old church. Bring a sleeping bag/duvet/warm blankets + mat/mattress to lie down on. Wear thick socks and warm clothes.
* COME WITH NO EXPECTATIONS and with an open mind.
* WEAR AN EYE MASK or put a scarf on your face to cover your eyes which can enhance your visual sound experience.

~ Doors open from 7pm. Please take your shoes off before entering the hall, and place your mats in tidy concentric circles around the centre.

~ Switch off your mobiles and use the toilets before the sound session begins.

~ We close the door strictly at 7.30pm. Gong sound bath lasts about 1hr30min.

~ The tea is served before and after the sound session. Optional ceremonial cocoa chocolates available for a suggested donation of £2.

~ Event capacity is 90 people. If you prefer small intimate groups, try out Kat's (Sound Mysterium) sessions at her studio in Chalk Farm.

Cut A Shine Monthly Barn Dance: Valentine’s
Saturday 15th February 2025

£10 - £25

TICKETS

Order of the Night
19:30: Venue, Bar and Food Stall Bar Opens
20:00 - 21:00: First Set of dances - more simple ones to learn the moves
21:00 - 21:30: Break!
21:30 - 23:30: Barn Dance Proper

It's our Valentine's Day special... and as we like to remind people, 200 years ago there was no "speed dating" or dating apps, people just danced! You never know, love might be in the air ;)

Whilst this is NOT a dating night, all the dances we do are about people dancing together, and many involve swapping partners and dancing with everyone in the room. This is speed dating of the 1700s!

About The Dancing
Although called many things; Ceilidh, Country Dance, Barn Dance, Ceili Dance, Square Dance, Set Dancing - one thing is certain, it's all "traditional" and how people would entertain themselves before TV and raves. We have a live band on stage to provide the music, and a "Dance Caller", who is expert at teaching you all the simple and fun moves. First we learn the dance by walking through it with the caller, then the band strike up, and we dance to the music. You don't need any experience, just willingness to have a go and have fun.

Cut A Shine Monthly Dances
Your monthly fix of endorphins inducing barn dance fun - dance and be silly like they used to do before electricity, TV and Netflix! We're excited to be hosting dances every month at The Round Chapel...

Inclusivity and Diversity
Our dances are All Inclusive, regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Although based largely on traditional European and American dance forms, we welcome all cultures and peoples to enjoy these dances and culture. We have tailored our dances to be non-heteronormative and involve everyone. We welcome members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Ticket Prices and Accessibility to The Arts
Low Income Tickets: £10
General Admission: £15
High Income Ticket: £20
Benefactor Ticket: £25

Our ticket pricing might seem complicated, but we want everyone to have access to the arts regardless of your financial situation. Cut A Shine is a not-for-profit dance company, and we want to engage our local community to get involved. If the cost of living crisis is affecting you, choose the cheaper ticket, then, depending on your income levels, pay what you can afford - all the way up to super awesome supporters of the arts!

Psychedelic Gong Bath

7:15 PM19:15

Psychedelic Gong Bath
